July was Resident Celebration Month at Meridian on First, which layered four themed events onto an already full calendar. Moving season did the rest, turning Marketplace into the busiest channel in the community feed with 255 comments.
Among total comments, 199 were new posts and 162 were replies, so almost half of July's activity was neighbors answering each other. Eleven of our 18 interest groups were active during the month.
The Resident Celebration Month Breakfast on July 6 led the month with 45 RSVPs. It added breakfast sandwiches in both lobbies to the pastries and coffee already scheduled that morning from For Five Coffee Roasters, which drew 25 RSVPs of its own.
Rooftop Havana Night on July 23 was second with 34 RSVPs, built around a live salsa DJ and MC plus margaritas on the Phase I Rooftop. The Cardio-Sculpt class led by F45 on that same rooftop on July 13 pulled 27 RSVPs, and a smoothie hour in the Phase I Lobby on July 16 added 22 more.
Yoga hosted by Lift Fitness met in the Spin/Yoga Studio on July 8 and July 22 for a combined 10 RSVPs, and Urban Boxing coached workouts on July 11 and July 25. A canned tuna drive for Move For Hunger also ran the full month, with bags picked up at the Concierge Desk and turned in by July 31 for a local food bank. Marketplace talk was dominated by residents furnishing and unfurnishing apartments: IKEA desks and bed frames, a CB2 chaise, a Nespresso Vertuo Pop+, bar stools and rugs. Plenty of it was free, including moving supplies, plant pots and shoe racks.
The best exchange of the month was smaller than any of that. On July 5 a resident offered a slice of chocolate chip banana bread to whoever could spare one egg. A neighbor answered within a minute, and the poster replied, "Proposal met. Eggs acquired."
Building Chat carried the practical questions. A resident asked where in Navy Yard to get a document notarized and got three answers in two minutes, one from a neighbor who is a notary and offered to bring supplies home from work. A resident who found an Apple Watch at the pool on July 28 turned it in to the Phase 1 front desk and posted so the owner could claim it. Marketplace is the largest group at 846 members, followed by the building-wide Meridian on First group at 811. Fitness Friends has 188 members and Pet Parents has 174. In Pet Parents, a resident asked where the pet spa is and got turn by turn directions ending in "Happy bathing!"
Book Club, at 143 members, picked its first book in July, The Rainbow, and set its next meeting for August 17 in the Club Room. In the Tennis group, which has 75 members, a resident proposed getting pickleball going on the renovated courts near Whole Foods. Nine residents replied with answers to July's beach-themed trivia round, which carried a $25 gift card. Community Bartering has 65 members and Language Exchange has 63.
Residents pointed each other to the sand volleyball court at Garfield Park, a five minute walk away, and to the renovated pickleball courts by Whole Foods. For a notary, neighbors recommended the UPS next to the CVS across the street. Book Club members shared free tickets to the Library of Congress National Book Festival at the Washington Convention Center.
Resident Celebration Month worked because the community was already engaged. The month's 162 replies, the free giveaways, the lent tools and the returned Apple Watch point the same direction: neighbors here answer each other quickly.
